5 Ways of Self-Appreciation for This New Year

Hello 2020! It's time for an actually HAPPY new year. But, how happy is it?

We all know it the new year traditions are extremely high-held and everyone is just spelled with it. But arriving the next day like today, the second of Jan, the vibe is washed away. But why? Why can't we be happy for the entire year? Here's a quick look into how SELF-APPRECIATION can make it happen.

Having taken up studies in Psychology, I'm in quest for originality more than ever. During my quest, I stumbled upon self-appreciation, a 'habit' that has the capability of turning into a 'quality'. My 2019 has been a pot-pourri of life, career and inner-seeking, that required a great deal of confidence in myself at every step. At every such step, it is the 'Appreciation' from the near-and-dear that held the pieces of my mind together. That is when I realised the value of even the smallest dose of appreciation that had the power to push. This coupled with an equal appreciation from the self, is what my conversation with 'psychology' told me.

5 possible ways for Self-Appreciation:

1. Forget the cliche of End and Beginning. It's just the next chapter.

A wise person once said "What feels like the end is often the beginning". But what does it begin? It begins the next chapter. Similarly, beginning a new year is a beginning of a new chapter in your book of life, where the highlights of other chapters cannot be missed. The past is what took you here and the present is all set to add value to it with much more good deeds! The past may be good or bad, but the one 'hidden good' in it is what has brought you to this fruitful present. Last year might have involved multiple efforts which this year won't let go wasted, bringing expectations on the good outcomes.

Have the practice of maintaining a diary. Keep a memory of yesterday and today, to bring a better tomorrow.

2. Boost yourself with the compilation of little doses of achievements.

Self-Appreciations involves memory - memory of even the little achievements of yours. Here, 'achievements' need not restrict themselves to a gold medallion or a metal trophy. They can be even the smallest praise or recognition that was able to bring a smile on your face. Compiling them into a collection and naming it 'Collection 2019' would bring the whole picture, standing as a true inspiration - THE INSPIRATION FROM YOURSELF.

Take a note and write it down. Record your every ounce of pride in a piece of paper and see it work wonders on your mind.

3. Accept that it's okay to party at peace.

With the new year, comes the hype of plans and parties. But if you're an introvert who celebrates with the view of fireworks right from the window or by lighting a cracker at the terrace, it TOTALLY OKAY! Be it the new year or any occasion that calls for a celebration, the definition celebration is totally unique to us. Find YOUR peace, YOUR way to make it YOUR celebration. You could also brag it as 'My kinda celebration' if you want to!

Just take a walk or watch the joy of celebrations if you couldn't be at one. Wish the dear ones and spread some love.

4. Choose Wish-list over Check-list.

The only difference between a WISH-list and a CHECK-list or a TO-DO list is the force. A wish-list faces the truth and lets you have things as a 'wish' that you would like to have, whereas, the check-list makes you 'want' it, making you stress over it. Wish-list indirectly brings contentment, making life much easier. Ditch the resolutions and just go light over your dreams with some wish. It's okay if you couldn't lose weight or hit the gym because of your work schedule. Just have it as a 'wish' and find time for it, when possible.

Don't strike it, instead, heart it♥ once your list is covered! Choose the positivity in the process.

5. Remember that life is not about Instagram stories.

Instagram, FaceBook and Whatsapp stories that are actually supposed to say the stories of people have given nothing but the craze to 'make up stories' for the world. Seeing everyone's party videos or vacation pictures or dinner dates are jaw-dropping indeed, yet, need not be essential. If your life's story is entirely different and way more simpler, so simpler that they don't match the levels of the other videos live, IT'S OKAY. You could still choose to put only a tiny part of your day, some good deed or a mere good word, that might bring a hearty smile to someone as simple as you on the other part of the world. It's okay to live a life without regular social media stories or the photogenic insta-worthy pictures.

Fill your space with memorable pictures or some good sayings. Craft your own story and make you the audience. You could stay judgement-free.

Just remember that the little things are the building blocks of happiness and no one is in this world for competition. So, make your own way and keep your own style. Be an original and appreciate your originality.

Make every day a happy day.

Chennai's first immersive experience: The Real Van Gogh as a Photoessay

Immersive art opens up a whole new dimension. Being to the Van Gogh immersive experience made me actualize this in real time, with the life-size visuals of Vincent van Gogh's masterpieces. The brush strokes of his post-impressionist style and the signature Prussian Blue (Bleu de Prusse) of his palette left me spellbound, bringing me more closer to art than ever. The way his earlier works captured the emotions of the people he drew and the way he personified such emotions into art in his later ones, certainly stirred me, as an onlooker. I'm extending that feeling--that experience to you through this photoessay: The Van Gogh world nestled in the middle of a happening place in the city.  My lens capturing twelve sunflowers in the frame ( "and nothing else" ) to reminisce the 1888 painting by the name.  The tale of "The man who painted sunflowers" The impressionist brush strokes never missi...

When Architecture Speaks: Between Architecture and Media Communication

Architecture, the visual form of creative space-making that keeps building up inside a person’s mind, is a work of art; an art that seeks ties to the inside of the onlooker. Over the years, architecture has emerged as a visually rich story that froze the historical events across the painted ceilings as in Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo or as inscriptions carved on walls in the Brihadeeswara temple in India. While some of the ’frozen history’ spoke for themselves, the others opened a whole new dimension of understanding when it took a step closer with documentation and research findings. This repository of architectural storytelling makes a building’s architecture ‘speak its heart out’, making the user achieve a connection to the truth of the making of the space. Journalism and written records have created a parallel track to the ongoing architectural evolution, which simultaneously records the architectural metamorphosis involved, and makes it an empirical record for any...

Great minds DON'T think alike- ‘Less is More’ Vs. ‘Less is Bore’

Human minds, even the great minds, have a belief that is true to just ONESELF. While the facts and quotations from them undergo wide acceptance (and an equal share of criticism), they face mixed reviews from the audience. This appreciation along with the criticism is highly dependent on the era of living, like-mindedness of people in the fraternity and much more, altogether bringing the famous quotes not as debates but as an understanding of the distinguishing factors around the idea. Decoding the ‘actual intent’ of the phrases- 1. The Timeline The postmodern architecture that was brought forth by industrial revolution, saw the mix if evolving culture, lifestyle, urban issues and more that lead to intrusion of ‘ new architectural solutions ’ to the society. While Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s works were revolutionary , Robert Venturi’s works were counter-revolutionary . The former focused on the efficiency of urban life, the latter focused on the richness of urban life. Being in the...
